Kennst, teure Mutter, du die schöne Fabel,
wie stets der Sonnengott zur Mutter fliegt,
die jede Nacht in ihrem welken Schoße
den wegemüden Sohn in Schlummer wiegt?

Muß er doch tagelang die Welt durchirren,
hat doch der Arme längst der Fahrt genug
durch graue Nebel, Wetter, düstre Wolken,
ach, fast so viel als je ein Mensch ertrug.

Er legt als Greis sich und ersteht als Jüngling
und strahlt mit neuer Kraft durchs Morgenrot –
O Mutter, Mutter, voller Engelsgüte, –
ich hab´ es so wie diese Sonne not!
